Today is President’s Day. The holiday makes me pause and think about America and how it was founded. The original signers of the Declaration of Independence desired a Republic built on faith in God. They wrote these words:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
John Adams, America’s Second President said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
Thomas Jefferson, Author of America’s Declaration of Independence and America’s Third President said: “God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever.”
America’s First President, General George Washington said, “While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian.”
James Madison, the Primary Author of the U.S Constitution and America’s Fourth President said, “We have staked the whole future of American civilization not on the power of the government, far from it. We have staked the future of all our political institutions upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.”
And finally, Benjamin Franklin, a signer of both America’s Declaration of Independence and The Constitution said, “I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth – that God Governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?”
Let’s pray for America and our leaders to seek after God so we can again be a Nation that serves the Lord.
